Use these distinctions to narrow the brief. The finished specification and a suitable sample determine whether a format works for your product.
| Format or decision | When to consider it | What to check before approval |
|---|---|---|
| Folded paperboard or corrugated | Partitions, platforms or dividers shaped from sheet material. | Check folding, support points and movement inside the outer box. |
| Cut foam | A cavity-shaped insert for a defined product layout. | Confirm foam specification, fit, surface compatibility and removal access. |
| Molded pulp | A formed fiber tray around the product profile. | Review tooling requirements, tolerances and the surface of the sample. |
| Formed plastic tray | A molded tray with cavities for product positioning. | Confirm the polymer, wall details, fit and any end-use documentation required. |
Identify the surfaces that can rest against an insert and the areas that need clearance. Consider product removal, accessory storage and the fit inside the outer box before choosing a material.
Check the assembled pack with the real product or an agreed equivalent. Assess movement, clearance and ease of removal, and confirm the sample or validation needed for the intended handling conditions.
Include the requested quantity, artwork status and delivery destination. Confirm available materials, sample requirements, pricing and timing in the written quotation.
Review them together. The product layout determines useful cavity space, while the outer box limits the finished insert dimensions and affects how the pack is assembled.
