Overview
Manufacturing Process:
Before manufacturing glassine paper, specialized wood pulp is needed. Unlike most other paper forms, the necessary wood pulp to manufacture glassine paper requires fully complete lignin separation to undergo the 'supercalender' process. At first, trees are chipped into wood chips and cooked to break the chemical bond of 'lignin' to separate the cellulose. This pulp slurry is then bleached, treated, and squeezed into molds, and then set to dry into sheets. Next, the fibers mat and intertwine as paper sheets form. Once dried, this material is then 'calendered', or pressed between multiple high-pressure hot cylinders called calendars to give it its smooth, glossy, translucent finish.
